Deobrat Mishra has a prominent place among young sitar
artists. On June 4th, 1976, he was born into a renowned musical family of
the Benares Gharana tradition in which his father, world famous Pandit Shivnath
Mishra taught him vocal music first then sitar at the age of five. From
his Mother, granddaughter of well known tablist Baiju Mishra, he learned rhythm.
Through these teachings, Deobrat continues on the tradition, now spanning seven
generations, in which selectivity, melody, and chain harmony (slow, medium, and
fast) are the main features of his style. At the tender age of eight, he gave
his first stage performance at a Shitala Temple and then at 11, his first All
India Radio program. For his performances he has always received much
praise and thanks, inspiring the many that come to hear his artform. His
first trip abroad occurred in 1994 when he visited Europe with his father. He
learned a lot during that first visit and now travels to Europe every year to
play with his Father and other musicians in a world fusion group based in Italy.
He does a lot of teaching in Europe as well, including a three day seminar on
Indian classical music organized by an Italian conservatory. In 1997 he
presented his first jazz concert in Florence which was well received.
Deobrat and his Father strive to reach as many people as possible through their
ancient craft, thereby allowing for the Gharana tradition to continue and
flourish. This continuing dream was further realized in June of 1999 when
they visited Canada for the first time. They returned in June of 2000 and
played to packed venues throughout British Columbia and the US. To add
fuel to their fire, Deobrat was presented with the Jewel of Sound award in
December of 2000, further helping us to realize that there is a future great
sitar artist in our midst.
