Hemen Concert Quality Sarod

The owner writes:

Concert Quality Sarod

Pictures are reversed, this is a right handed sarode.

This 25 year old, Hemen made sarod has been used for concert tours and studio recordings in Europe and the USA by sarod virtuoso, K. Sridhar.  It has 25 strings, a brass gourd, rose-styled pegs and is made of teak.  It is 43-1/2 inches long and comes with a travel case which includes a string box.

This sarod is in top condition and produces a lovely, hollow sound.  Although it is Hemen made, the label fell off at one point while the sarod was cleaned at the factory and the artist did no have the label replaced.  A signed statement that this sarod was bought at the Hemen factory in Calcutta will be provided by the artist.

Please contact Sitars Etc. as price has not bee established for this Sarod.

Two Persian Settars

The first one is made by Rasekh, handmade authentic. Price $600 + shipping.

The second one is by Hosaini, also handmade. Price $400 + shipping

The owner writes:

I used to play Settar under the supervision and coaching of Mr. Tajbakhsh, a very well known music writer, also greatly know for his works with Settar, Tar, as well as the piano, among all authentic Persian music fans.

After I moved to the US I stopped playing a lot and I have decided that these great instruments are much better off in the hands of someone that will get great use from them.

Varanasi Santur
removed by owner

The owner writes:

This santur was bought by the owner in Varanasi (Banaras). It has nice penwork reminiscent of Kashmiri and Persian influence. Actually the sound is quite Central Asian like more suitable to Afghan, Kirghiz, or Kazakh music than to North Indian music,  mostly in the upper register.  The lower register sounds more Indian.  It is a nice instrument to start with. It comes with a hard case (not fiberglass) and cover,  strings, plus the tuning chiavvi and a pair of rosewood mallets (kalams).  It has some blemishes.  Lesson to learn: airlines do not care for anything fragile even when they put on all the stickers.  Owner would like to start the price at $400.00 but is open to negotiation.

Sengupta Sitar

SOLD

This beautiful, mint-condition sitar has an extraordinary musical tone. Made in Calcutta by Sengupta, whose sitars have been compared to instruments made by Hiren Roy.  Sitar player Mita Nag personally monitored the making of the instrument and the final inspection.    It was ordered in 2001 and completed by 2002.  This kharaj-pancham, tun instrument is very well constructed, both on the outside and inside.  The workmanship is excellent.  It has a good feel and a tone similar to a Nikhil Banerjee instrument. It sings and resonates, and the semi-open jawari allows the instrument to ring out while remaining clear and lyrical.

Asking $1199.  The price includes shipping and a heavy-duty fiberglass, single-tumba case.

Srishti Manipur Tun Sitar
New lower price!
SOLD

The owner writes:

I bought this Srishti Manipur Tun from Sitars Etc. in Aug. of '05,  and while I've been playing guitar and other string instruments for going on 42 years, including the Sarode and Oud, I just don't bond well with this instrument, perhaps owing to my bad back, and difficulties of sitting easily with it.

It is a beautiful Sitar,  which has been gently played for not more than several hours, and has spent all its time, when not played, in the case. It's in as close  'as new' shape, as it can be, without being exactly that, since I've owned it, but it's been well protected.

As you can see in the  pictures, the appointments follow those of the Manipur Teak as shown on the Sitars Etc. site, though I've no doubt its a Tun instrument, and it does say that variations may occur in decor.

47 of my 55 years with music have taught me to be very meticulous concerning the care  of any instrument I own.

Lovely sound, and great jawari. It tunes  easily, and holds tune well.

It comes with a brown fiberglass case,  with a red silk bag, and all of the accessories that accompany the
professional series sitars, including the book by Manfred Junius. I'm
asking $1,000.00. I pay shipping for the US & Canada.  Others from other countries would be responsible for the shipping costs which would be calculated at the time of sale.

Sengupta Sitar

SOLD!

A Calcutta style sitar made by Sengupta
In perfect condition, comes with single tumba hard case

This is a instrument made in Calcutta, by  Sengupta, favored by Manilal and Mita Nag.  They have confidence in Sengupta to produce instruments comparable to Hiren Roy.  Mita Nag personally monitored the making of the instrument and the final inspection.    It was ordered in 2001 and completed by 2002.  This kharaj-pancham, tun instrument is very well constructed, both on the outside and inside.  The workmanship is excellent.  It has a good feel and a tone similar to a Nikhil Banerjee instrument. The owner, who is a sitar instructor says that he has not been able to detect any significant flaws with the instrument.   He has three more instruments and does not have time to keep improving the tone of the sitar by playing on it often enough.  He would like to find a good home for it.

Hiren Roy is perhaps the most well known of the shops from Calcutta, India.  Aged instruments of Hiren Roy is the preferred choices among professional musicians. The shop continues to make sitars in limited quantities. The focus is on sound which generally has a dark quality to it and more suited to those playing in the style of Nikhil Banerjee especially. The Hiren Roy tun concert sitar is made of the finest available aged Indian mahogany and carved in a popular traditional style of Calcutta. Beautiful inlay and single color penwork done in a light brown with a  faded, antique look and a design unique to Hiren Roy instruments. Nicely carved pegs, carefully fitted and chalked. Hiren Roy sitars use synthetic materials for the bridge, targhan, and langot with the goal of longer lasting jawari and overall  longevity. The top tumba is equally as decorated as the sitar and made of natural gourd in large size. The jawari is semi-closed and professionally done, the string layout is Ravi Shankar Kharaj Pancham style. All frets finely tuned and fitted in India and double checked at Sitars Etc. before shipping! Meend (bending) of 5 to 6 notes is easily accomplished. Also a quality fiberglass flight case.
