The Sarangi is a member of the Indian bowed strings  familty of Indian Classical Music instruments.  It  has traditionally been associated with the kathak dance and the vocal styles of thumri, dadra and kheyal. It has four main playing strings, 11 top sympathetic strings tuned to the Raga, and 24 side sympathetic strings to include all the notes in a the playing scale. The main body is made from tun and it has stretched animal skin to provide the sound box.  It has no frets or fingerboard; the play strings float in the air.  And is played with the fingernail against the string.  The Sarangi is considered the next best thing to the human voice in Indian Classical Music.
